The Poorest Student Becomes A Legend – Chapter 1

Today, the entire campus seemed to be alive with energy.

The university football team had just secured a major victory, and the excitement was impossible to ignore.

Students flooded the walkways, their voices loud and joyful as they made their way toward the grand hall where a celebration had already begun.

Music blasted through large speakers, echoing across the courtyard, and the sound of laughter rose into the air like a chorus of carefree youth.

Inside the hall, the party was in full swing. Bright lights flickered, students danced without restraint, and long tables were filled with food and drinks.

It was the kind of moment people would remember long after their university years were over.

Yet, at the far edge of the same hall, far removed from the joy and celebration, Jordan Cole worked in silence.

With a mop in his hands and a bucket of murky water beside him, he scrubbed the floor carefully, removing muddy footprints that students had tracked in during their excitement.

His shirt, though clean, was faded from repeated washing, and the sleeves were rolled unevenly to his elbows.

His trousers had been patched more than once, and his shoes, though neatly kept, showed clear signs of wear.

Jordan paused briefly and glanced at the large clock mounted on the wall. His heart skipped a beat.

“I’m going to be late,” he murmured to himself, his voice low and filled with worry.

He tightened his grip on the mop and resumed his work with greater urgency.

Each movement became quicker, more deliberate, as if he could somehow erase time by working faster.

Today was not just another day of labor for him. Today, he had plans, plans he had been looking forward to all week.

A small smile appeared on his face as he thought of Lila Grant.

“She’ll understand… maybe just a few more minutes,” he whispered, trying to reassure himself. “I just need to clean up, change, and get there.”

However, as he continued working quietly along the edge of the hall, he began to feel eyes on him.

At first, it was subtle, just a few passing glances from nearby students. Then came the whispers.

“Is that guy still working?”

“During a party? That’s honestly so sad.”

“I think he’s one of the janitors… but isn’t he also a student?”

The whispers grew louder, and before long, they turned into open laughter.

A boy holding a drink stepped closer, his expression filled with amusement. “Hey, you,” he called out casually. “Cleaner boy. Are you not invited to the party, or is this your way of celebrating?”

The group around him chuckled.

Another student, a girl with bright makeup and a mocking smile, added, “No, no, he is part of the party. Someone has to clean up after us, right?”

Laughter erupted again.

Jordan’s hands paused for a brief moment on the mop handle. He could feel the sting of their words, sharp and humiliating.

For a second, he considered looking up, saying something, anything to defend himself.

But he didn’t.

Instead, he lowered his head and continued working, as if he hadn’t heard them at all.

“Wow,” one of them said sarcastically, “he’s pretending we don’t exist.”

“Or maybe he just knows his place,” another replied, earning more laughter.

Jordan swallowed hard, forcing himself to stay focused.

Just keep working, he told himself firmly. You need this job. Don’t ruin it.

The tension in the air shifted suddenly when a tall figure approached, his presence immediately drawing attention.

Brandon Hale.

He was known across Ravenhall University, not just as the star of the basketball team, but as someone untouchable.

His father’s influence within the university made him someone people rarely dared to challenge.

Brandon took a slow sip from his drink as he observed Jordan, a faint smirk forming on his lips.

“Well, this is interesting,” he said, his voice smooth but laced with mockery. “While everyone else is celebrating, you’re here working like a servant.”

Jordan remained silent.

Brandon stepped closer, his gaze fixed on him. “Tell me something,” he continued, tilting his head slightly. “Do you ever get tired of this? Cleaning up after people who are actually enjoying their lives?”

Jordan finally spoke, though his tone remained calm. “It’s my job. I just do what I have to do.”

Brandon let out a short laugh. “Your job,” he repeated. “Right. Of course.”

Without warning, he tipped his cup and poured the remaining drink onto the floor Jordan had just finished cleaning. The liquid spread quickly, undoing Jordan’s effort in seconds.

A few students gasped, but most burst into laughter.

Jordan stared at the mess, his jaw tightening.

Before he could react, Brandon spat onto the same spot.

“Looks like you missed something,” Brandon said casually.

Then, reaching into his pocket, he pulled out some money and tossed it onto the wet, dirty floor.

“Go on,” he said, his voice louder now so others could hear. “Pick it up. I know you need it. That’s probably enough for your lunch.”

The hall grew quiet with anticipation. Several students lifted their phones, ready to record what would happen next.

Jordan looked at the money, then at Brandon.

For a moment, the room seemed to hold its breath.

“I don’t want it,” Jordan said quietly.

The reaction was immediate.

“What did he say?”

“He refused?”

Brandon’s smile faded, replaced by a cold expression. “Say that again.”

Jordan met his gaze, his voice steady despite the tension in his chest. “I said I don’t want it.”

Instead of bending down to pick up the money, he resumed mopping the floor, cleaning the mess Brandon had created.

That act of defiance was enough to ignite Brandon’s anger.

In a sudden motion, he kicked over the dirty water bucket beside Jordan. The bucket crashed loudly, sending murky water splashing across the floor, ruining everything Jordan had already cleaned.

Gasps echoed through the hall.

Jordan stepped back, shocked and frustrated.

“What is wrong with you?” he exclaimed, unable to hold back any longer.

Before anything else could happen, a hall supervisor rushed over, clearly alarmed by the commotion.

“What is going on here?” he demanded sharply.

Brandon spoke first, his tone calm and controlled. “I was just standing here,” he said, gesturing casually, “and he suddenly started shouting at me.”

The supervisor turned to Jordan with a disapproving look. “Is that true?”

“No, sir,” Jordan replied quickly. “He spilled his drink on purpose and”

“I don’t want excuses,” the supervisor interrupted harshly. “You are here to work, not argue with students.”

“But”

“That is enough!” the supervisor snapped. “Clean this mess immediately. And let me make something very clear,if I hear another complaint about you, you will lose this job. Do you understand?”

Jordan looked around helplessly. Students were laughing again, some whispering, others recording the scene.

He lowered his gaze.

“Yes, sir,” he said quietly.

And so, he bent down and began cleaning again.

By the time Jordan finished, his body ached and his spirit felt heavy. The party was still ongoing, but he felt completely disconnected from it. All he wanted now was to clean himself up and leave.

He made his way toward the athletes’ locker room, hoping it would be empty.

As he approached, however, he heard sounds coming from inside.

At first, he ignored them, but then they became clearer, soft moans, unmistakable and intimate.

Jordan stopped immediately.

“Oh… someone’s in there,” he muttered, stepping back.

Out of respect, he chose to wait outside.

As he leaned against the wall, his thoughts drifted once more to Lila.

She had always been careful, reserved. Whenever the topic of intimacy came up, she would gently say, “I’m not ready yet, Jordan.”

And every time, he would smile and respond, “It’s okay. I can wait.”

He meant it.

So he waited.

Minutes passed before the door finally opened.

Jordan looked up.

Brandon stepped out first.

Jordan frowned slightly, though he wasn’t surprised.

But then, a girl stepped out behind him, her hand intertwined with Brandon’s.

“Brandon, you’re too much,” she said softly, her voice light with laughter.

Jordan froze.

That voice…

His heart began to race as he stepped forward.

“Excuse me,” he said, gently tapping her shoulder.

She turned.

And in that moment, his world shattered.

“Lila…?” he whispered.

Her eyes widened in shock. “Jordan?”

He stared at her, his voice trembling. “What… what is this? You were inside with him?”

For a brief moment, it seemed like she might explain.

But then her expression hardened.

“Why are you here?” she snapped loudly.

Jordan blinked in confusion. “I… I just finished work. I came to clean up and”

“God, Jordan,” she interrupted sharply. “You’re embarrassing me.”

The words hit him deeply.

“Embarrassing you?” he repeated weakly.

“Look at yourself,” she continued, raising her voice as students nearby began to gather. “You’re dirty, you smell like cleaning chemicals, and you’re standing here questioning me like you have any right!”

“I just wanted to understand,” he said softly.

“Understand what?” she scoffed. “That I don’t want to be with someone like you?”

The crowd grew larger, laughter spreading through the group.

“You’re a janitor,” she continued harshly. “Do you know how that makes me look? I can’t be seen with someone like you.”

Jordan felt his chest tighten painfully.

“But… you said you loved me,” he said, his voice barely audible.

Lila laughed coldly.

“Loved you?” she repeated. “Please. I barely even know you.”

Jordan stood there, completely still, as the weight of her words crushed him.

Behind her, Brandon watched the scene with clear amusement, a satisfied smile on his face.

And around them, students laughed, whispered, and recorded everything.

In that moment, surrounded by so many people, Jordan had never felt more alone.
